How to learn about wine and food pairing

Gretchen Roberts from the Everyday Wine blog has a great idea for beginning wine drinkers in her post, 'A match made in heaven.'

Her idea is simple and brilliant - get the hang of wine and food pairing my sampling a few tried and true pairings!

Her classic pairings include:

Champagne and caviar
Sauternes and foie gras
Sauvignon Blanc and goat cheese
Cabernet Sauvignon and steak
Bordeaux and lamb
Sherry and lobster bisque
Port and chocolate

I strongly agree with the Sauvignon Blanc and goat cheese, the Sherry and lobster bisque and Port and chocolate. I would add Pinot Noir and salmon and oaky California Chardonnay with grilled seafood.

The key is to put a bite of food in your mouth, then a sip of wine and see if the two together taste more delicious than each one would by itself.

What are your classic pairings?
